MASTERCLASS IN FACIAL ANATOMY AND DISSECTION – HANDS-ON
By Canadian Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine
This Masterclass course is an intensive, hands-on training course designed for medical professionals to gain in-depth understanding of facial anatomy through cadaver dissection, enhancing precision in aesthetic and surgical procedures
 Module 1:Â
Surface Anatomy & Live Model Marking
Objective: Build familiarity with facial topography, injection sites, and danger zones on real patients.
- Introduction to facial thirds: Upper (forehead), midface (cheeks), lower (jawline/chin)
- Anatomical landmarks:
- Glabella complex, orbital rim, zygomatic arch, mandibular angle, chin point
- Muscle mapping:
- Frontalis, corrugator, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major/minor, DAO, masseter
- Neurovascular pathways:
- Facial artery, angular artery, supratrochlear & supraorbital nerves
- Technique: Live palpation and facial mapping using marker pens and reference photos
 Module 2:Â
Layer-by-Layer Cadaveric Dissection
Objective: Understand the anatomical depth and relationships between facial layers.
- Sequential dissection from superficial to deep:
- Skin & subcutaneous tissue
- Superficial fat pads (e.g., nasolabial, malar)
- SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System)
- Facial muscles (e.g., levator labii superioris, mentalis)
- Deep fat compartments (e.g., deep medial cheek fat)
- Vascular and nerve structures
- Periosteum & bone landmarks
- Side-by-side comparison with anatomical diagrams
- Supervised cadaver dissection stations
 Module 3:Â
Injection Simulation on Cadavers
Objective: Practice precise injection techniques on dissected faces with anatomical feedback.
- Filler techniques:
- Linear threading in nasolabial folds, bolus in cheeks, retrograde injections in jawline
- Botulinum toxin techniques:
- Injections into glabellar, frontalis, orbicularis oculi, masseter
- Cadaver injection verification:
- Observe filler placement accuracy by dissecting post-injection
- Identify intravascular errors and volume misplacement
 Module 4:Â
Complication Management and High-Risk Zones
Objective: Improve diagnostic and responsive skills for preventing and managing complications.
- Anatomical mapping of risk zones:
- Glabella (supratrochlear artery), nasolabial (facial artery), nasal tip (angular artery)
- Complication response training:
- Vascular occlusion: Early signs, capillary refill test, hyaluronidase protocols
- Bruising and swelling: Compression, cooling, arnica, post-care
- Nerve impingement: Signs and time-based resolution
