Aesthetic medicine requires individualised assessment, anatomical knowledge and careful attention to patient expectations. This course introduces non-surgical aesthetic practice, distinguishing it from aesthetic surgery and examining the professional responsibilities that underpin treatment decisions.
The teaching covers consultation, skin anatomy, product suitability and handling, botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and laser and intense pulsed light treatments. Additional discussions introduce thread procedures, combination treatments and other aesthetic approaches.
The course suits doctors, including dermatologists and clinicians developing their knowledge of aesthetic medicine. It also offers practitioners an opportunity to review consultation, documentation, treatment selection and follow-up through clinical examples and participant questions.
Participants practise clinical reasoning by reviewing patient suitability, treatment expectations, anatomical considerations and safety concerns. Facial filler and botulinum toxin demonstrations illustrate the presenter's approaches to planning and technique; these discussions are not standalone procedural protocols.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish the scope of aesthetic medicine from aesthetic surgery and explain relevant professional responsibilities.
- Assess patient expectations, medical and treatment history, skin characteristics and reasons to defer treatment or seek further assessment.
- Relate skin layers, facial anatomy and tissue characteristics to aesthetic treatment planning.
- Identify product suitability, handling, aseptic practice and device-specific safety considerations.
- Compare the treatment purposes and planning considerations discussed for injectables, peels and energy-based procedures.
- Evaluate the demonstrated approaches and outline consent, documentation, aftercare and follow-up priorities.
